Teaching Approach & Personal Information
In 1991 I began concentrating my teaching efforts towards lessons in the home of the student. I feel that students can benefit from the relaxed atmosphere of their own home.
As a professional musician for thirty-five years, I am required to play many types of music. I bring this experience to my teaching present the student with a variety of music styles. I feel it is necessary for the student, whether child or adult, to be able to play some of the music they enjoy. This can lead to the confidence and natural curiosity that is needed to explore and master the technical challenges of making music.
My goal is to construct and follow an inclusive learning program in which the student’s ideas and participation will be valued. This program will include instruction on proper practicing, piano technique, music reading and music analysis. I also encourage the beginning student to "use their ears" and try to play simple familiar melodies. The materials I use will match the student’s level and include exercises and methods of my own, along with a published piano course. There are many teaching resources available; I am always looking for those I feel will best be understood by the student.
On a personal note, I have been schooled at Bucks County Community College, Newtown, PA and Berklee College of Music in Boston. I have studied with noted jazz instructors Adolph Sandole in Philadelphia and Charlie Banacos in Boston.
